School and gender-based violence

Child protection and education initiative, West and Central Africa

Following the UN Study on Violence against Children, efforts to prevent and respond to violence in schools and education settings were strengthened in West and Central Africa (WCA). Action Aid, Plan WARO, Save the Children Sweden WA and UNICEF WCARO joined forces in 2008 as an Education and Child Protection initiative, with the objective of strengthening and accelerating interventions with regards to violence in schools.

EfC was commissioned by UNICEF WCARO on behalf of the above mentionned initiative, to write a synthesis report on violence in and around schools in West and Central Africa and to research initiatives from a range of partners at regional, national and school levels that prevent or respond to school-based violence.

Gender-based violence research, resources and training materials in Lebanon

In 2008, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) Lebanon launched a 2-year project aimed at mainstreaming and institutionalising gender-based violence in national planning and development. Two key activities emerged from the GBV Plan of Action 2009-2011: 1) to review all GBV research in Lebanon and 2) to review all resource and training materials, guides, tools and information systems on GBV in Lebanon.

EfC was commissioned by UNFPA Lebanon to undertake the two above-mentionned assignments. EfC led the design of analytical frameworks for assessing complied research studies and training and learning resources, gathered and catalogued documentation in Arabic, English and French, and undertook stakeholder consultations including focus groups.

The final analytical report with recommendations and full catalogues of the documentation gathered is expected to be published by UNFPA Lebanon in 2011.
